Charlie

Birthday: May 12th 2013
Breed: Clydesdale
Gender: Gelding
Favorite Treat: Apples
Story: We can't introduce our family without talking about Charlie first.  He was the one that started this all and is the face you see on our logo!  Charlie was bred to be a Budweiser Clydesdale but didn't make the cut! He came to us almost entirely unbroken and had lots of trust issues and self-confidence issues.  He's now a big, lovable bear who has a heart for kids.

Tonto

Birth Year Estimate: 2000

Breed: Unknown

Gender: Gelding

Favorite Treat: Horse Cookies

Story: Tonto arrived to us in terrible condition; he had been pulled from a kill pen and was practically skin and bones. His feet were terrible, and he had severe EPM, a neurological illness that causes incoordination, muscular atrophy, and loss of sensation throughout the body. Now, he's regained all of his weight, his feet are better, and his EPM is being treated! He loves to go on trail rides and is the first to the gate in the morning.  Kids are his absolute favorite and is so gentle with them. Tonto has a way of touching people's hearts, making smiles and is a favorite on this ranch.

Lakota

Birthday: April 19th, 2000

Breed: Standardbred

Gender: Mare

Favorite Treat: Horse Cookies

Story: Lakota has been through a lot before finding a home at our ranch.  She was bred to be a winning racehorse. However, after she failed to succeed like her father "Artsplace", she was hauled off the track to be a broodmare (breeding stock).  Once she could no longer produce steady foals, she was placed into a kill pen.  Lakota is still a little distant to others due to her trauma, but she has gradually shown us that there is still a fire in her that wants to shine!  She loves to run and play in the pasture when she thinks no one is looking.

Thank you Starry Skies Equine Rescue!

Queenie

Birth Year Estimate: 1993

Breed: Standardbred

Gender: Mare

Favorite Treat: Horse Cookies

Story: Queenie is a hit with the kids around here! This old lady has gone through a lot in her long life. She was a spunky race horse named "Let Me Loose!" in her early days.  When she was no longer able to compete, she worked for the Amish for a while.  After she could no longer work hard, she was placed in a kill pen.  She is now loved on by all of the kids (and adults) that visit our ranch. She boosts the confidence of our young riders and students and enjoys being brushed and scratched!

Thank you Starry Skies Equine Rescue!

Ray (Sponsored by Kathy ❤️

Birth Year Estimate: 2001
Breed: Standardbred
Gender: Gelding

Favorite Treat: Horse Cookies
Story: Ray was saved from the kill pen following his racing career and, we presume, time spent working for the Amish. He came in with respiratory problems (asthma), was out of shape, and had terrible feet! Ray is breathing much better now, thanks to his special medications, and he is becoming more comfortable as we continue to work on his feet.  Among our regulars, he is a favorite!  He is also a great teacher and spends most of his time with our beginner lesson students in both English and Western.

Thank you Starry Skies Equine Rescue and Kathy!

Bahubali (Bahu)

Birth Year Estimate: 2003

Breed: Rocky Mountain Horse

Gender: Gelding

Favorite Treat: Carrots

Story: We don't know too much about this sweet guy's history.  We got him along with his brother, Bhalla, and they have been a well loved addition to this ranch.  Since he has a smooth gait, he makes an excellent teacher on the trails for both kids and adults!

Bhallaladeva (Bhalla)

Birth Year Estimate: 2001

Breed: Rocky Mountain Horse

Gender: Gelding

Favorite Treat: Everything

Story: Bhalla came onto our ranch with his brother, Bahu.  He is a sweet, lazy guy that loves treats and scratches!  He is great with the kids and loves to take it slow.

Dolly (Sponsored by the Boris Family ❤️

Birth Year Estimate: 2006

Breed: Haflinger/Belgian

Gender: Mare

Favorite Treat: Sugar Free Horse Biscuits

Story: Dolly arrived at our ranch in a state of need. She had been a work horse and a broodmare (breeding stock) for many years.  Her feet had deteriorated as a result of being overworked and ended up foundering on all four feet. Founder is the rotation of the coffin bone in their hooves and it is very painful.  We found a foot specialist who worked with Dolly for months and her feet are finally happy again! She still has a long way to go to treat her sore muscles from the founder, but we are not giving up on her!

Thank you Starry Skies Equine Rescue and Boris Family!

Honda

Birth Year Estimate: 2004

Breed: Saddlebred

Gender: Gelding

Favorite Treat: Carrots

Story: Honda came to us underweight, his mouth was full of infected sores and his mouth, throat and stomach was full of ulcers.  The mouth sores have healed, but he still has a tough time gaining his weight back.  After working with him, we believe he may have come from a background of harsh show discipline and training.  Since we've began his treatment, he has learned to slow down and trust us to help him.  He is the cuddliest horse in the pasture and absolutely loves the attention.  We love his quirky personality and he is always ready to go!

Anna & Elsa

(Sponsored by Jennifer, Camden and Dee ❤️)
Birth Year Estimate: 2006 & 2002

Breed: Percheron

Gender: Mare

Favorite Treat: Alfalfa Soup

Story: These two have worked hard their entire lives.  Once they could no longer work, they were neglected and starved.  Both of them have damaged teeth as a result of their neglect and require a special "soup" in order to eat.  Since we've had them, they've gained a healthy amount of weight and have more balanced feet.  They are honestly the sweetest and most patient girls you'll ever meet.  We can't wait to watch them shine and grow strong together!

Thank you Starry Skies Equine Rescue!

Picasso

Birth Year Estimate: April 27, 2015

Breed: Standardbred

Gender: Gelding

Favorite Treat: Horse Cookies

Story: Welcome to our ranch's newest addition!  Picasso is a retired harness racehorse with wry mouth.  After his short career on the track, he wound up in a kill pen.  He is a very charming guy who is super curious, lives for scratches and is always willing to learn.  We're so thankful that we are able to give him a home for him to grow, learn and be a happy horse again!

Thank you Standardbred Retirement Foundation and New Journey Farms!
